From the Principal

Dear families

We are certainly getting to the business end of the term with a strong focus on assessment in classrooms at the moment. This is the final opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learnt this semester. Teachers consider all tasks completed over a semester to make an on-balance judgement of a student’s achievement, which is what is included in semester-end reports. We will be distributing reports during Week 10 and holding Learning Conferences early in Term 3 to provide opportunities to discuss the learning.

The fortnight has also been busy with a number of events, the highlight of which was our Athletics Carnival but also included excursions to the Desert Knowledge Precinct and a Clontarf Camp and incursions by Reach and ‘Its Rocket Science’.

Last week we also had a day of staff learning in which we launched with our teachers a common instructional model. The model will help us to ensure that learning experiences for students are consistent across different subjects. It also gives us a frame to be able to continue to promote high impact teaching practices. Thank you for supporting us with our day of learning. You will hear much more about our instructional model over Semester 2.

The Finke Weekend is upon us, which is a fantastic, positive experience for many of our students. If you are going to Finke – spectating or competing – please be particularly mindful of safety as there are many risks.

Nominations recently closed for the 2019 Teaching Excellence Awards. I am delighted to announce that the following CMS staff were nominated for an award:

  • Andrew Brown
  • Jeremy Cook
  • Stefanie Farr
  • Rachel Helliwell
  • Mikaila Mangohig
  • Sarah McCord
  • Natalie O’Connor
  • Wellington Pasi
  • Catherine Stone
  • Hans Westermann

The winners of these awards will be announced as a part of World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Term 3.

The mid-year break is approaching. Like in 2018, the break is 3 weeks long. All students need to be back at school ready to engage in learning on Tuesday 23rd July.

Warm regards
Paul van Holsteyn
Principal

Our Year 7 students spent some time recently at the Desert Knowledge Precinct exploring solar energy. This included working with solar powered grasshopper robots. Thanks to Desert Knowledge Australia for hosting us.
