Principals Report

To the whole CMS community, I am very pleased to be introducing our new newsletter. Following some really constructive feedback from our school council, we had a good look around to find a format that was more accessible and interactive. We are really happy with the format that we have found. Because we have taken a while to set this up, there has been a bit of time since the last newsletter. Hopefully after reading this edition you will be all caught up on the great things that have been happening and are planned at CMS.

Term four is traditionally very busy in schools, and we have plenty planned. There are four school camps going ahead this term, as well as presentation night and our year nine graduation. Our first camp kicks off on Wednesday with our Year Sevens heading out for three days of fun and learning at Ross River.

Last week our Wellbeing team along with Loveena Guilford planned a great week of activities for Mental Health Week. Staff from Child and Youth Mental health Services made a great presentation to a parent group. Their three main themes were: helping your teenager cope with stress; building resiliency; and communicating with your teenager. Later in the newsletter you will see a copy of the information covered. I strongly urge all families to have a read. As a parent I got a lot out of the presentation.

We are really interested to get feedback on our new Newsletter, so please let us know what you think.

Science News

This term in Science the Yr 9’s are continuing their studies in Ecology. At the end of last term we were lucky enough to have a talk by the Chief Scientist for Biodiversity in Central Australia. He spoke to the students about rare, extinct and endangered species in the NT. The students enjoyed the presentation and were given copy of a beautiful book of photos and information about these species. Here is a photo of Christine Woods and Caitlin McDowell accepting a copy of the book.

Year 7s

In year 7 the students were recently enjoying doing some work on Chemistry and the students can be seem here learning how to put together equipment which is separating copper sulphate crystals from a solution by a method called distillation.

Year 8s

In year 8 the students have just finished studying Geology and particularly enjoyed making their own fossils.

Year 9s

This term in Science the Yr 9’s are continuing their studies in Ecology. At the end of last term we were lucky enough to have a talk by the Chief Scientist for Biodiversity in Central Australia. He spoke to the students about rare, extinct and endangered species in the NT. The students enjoyed the presentation and were given copy of a beautiful book of photos and information about these species. Laptop Program

Since Term 3, CMS has been trailing a 1:1 laptop program with students from 8(2). The laptops are manufactured by Lenovo and are state of the art. Following a family orientation session, participants in the trial have been taking their laptops home so that they can use them to complete homework and assignments.
