2011: A Year in Review

Rebecca Ralph
16.12.2011

In its second year of operation, Centralian Middle School has reached new heights in terms of achievement levels and events.

This year saw CMS embark on an exciting journey with the Australian Curriculum. From the beginning of 2012, curricula for English, Maths, Science and History will be taken from the Australian Curriculum. This allows CMS to more easily utilise resources developed interstate as well as making it easier for families who move elsewhere in Australia. SOSE and English teacher, Cassandra Connelly has been selected to be part of the Australian Curriculum Teacher Engagement Pilot program in 2012.

A look back at the 2011 school year sees numerous local, interstate and international excursions; all of which were highly anticipated by both staff and students. Students involved in Theatre activities such as the Central Australian Eisteddfod worked hard to achieve success at a local competition level, while our CMS dance troupe blew the crowd off their feet at the Desert Festival.

Sporting achievements were high, with the Mparntwe Clontarf Academy boys travelling to Katherine in August where they took out the U15 Northern Australian Carnival for the second year in a row. Year 8 student, Kyle Summerfield proved himself as an outstanding athlete when he won the Junior King of the Mountain challenge earlier this year. In a Central Australian schools first, 17 CMS students were awarded Bronze Medallions after completing a 10 week life saving course.

Students from across the year levels were privileged to work with renowned Multimedia artist Aroha Groves and produced some fantastic 3D art using the web-based program, Second Life.

A team of budding scientists took out the Endeavour and Teamwork award at the Science and Engineering Challenge in May.

Our Tournament of the Minds team fared well in the social science challenge ‘The Camera Lies’, qualifying for the Final round in Darwin in September.

Our ‘Girls’ at the Centre’ program for won a coveted National Australia Bank Impact Award. This award is valued at $50,000 and will allow the G@C to expand their program in 2012.

We were privileged to host many famous faces over the 2011 year, including illustrator Terry Denton, High School Musical starlet Monique Coleman and Adelaide United FC players Marcos Flores, Eugene Galekovic and Daniel Mullen.

Centralian Middle School Principal, Mr Andrew Leslie noted that “2011 has been an exciting year for us. There have been some amazing achievements across the school and this was reflected at Presentation Night. On behalf of the CMS community I would like to wish the township of Alice Springs a safe and happy Festive Season”.

The new school year will commence for students on January 31, 2012.
